Distribution and discovery are moving to defaults, not developer choices

A listing's reach, its search relevance, and its layout are increasingly decided by settings a developer never touched, not by intentional configuration.

Google Play began sharing US developers' listings with rival Android app stores by default this week unless developers opt out, Play's own search box started reading plain-language queries instead of exact keyword matches, and the store client itself shipped denser layouts for large screens. None of these are settings most teams have reviewed this quarter. Each one changes where an app can be found, how it is found, and what it looks like once found.

The same release lets Play prompt users to add an app's home-screen widget immediately after installation, instead of leaving discovery to the manual widget picker.
